DIIV

DIIV (Brooklyn, NY)

Chances are, you’ve heard of them, they caused quite a few ripples in the blogosphere, so I am not telling you anything you don’t already know. BUT, if that’s not the case – read on

They used to be known as Dive (inspired by Nirvana’s song, and by the fact that everyone in the band is a water sign – of the zodiac kind), formed by a combo of ingredients from Beach Fossils and Smith Westerns: Zachary Cole Smith (formed the band – in his bedroom, is of the Beach Fossils), joined by Devin Ruben Perez on bass, Andrew Bailey on guitar, and Colby Hewitt (formerly of Smith Westerns) on drums.

I have to say, I am not a particular fan (if push came to shove and I had to chose - Smith Westerns win), so I was surprised to find DIIV does not sound anything like either.

Shoegazed dreampop, my kind of summer music, they sprung to life in 2011, released their debut LP – “Oshin” in June 2012, influenced by Krautrock, C86 bands, Nirvana of course and, erm – world music – Baba Salah to be precise.

I am still trying to form an opinion of the whole album, but Doused is keeping me from listening to the rest of it.

On repeat all day:
